The Asian Model Minority Myth and Anti-Blackness

NPR’S CodeSwitch posted an article titled “‘Model Minority’ Myth Again Used As A Racial Wedge Between Asians And Blacks.”

The Asian “model minority” myth is harmful in so many ways, and not just from white folks who use it as a justification for racism.

I grew up in an Asian community that not only believed this myth, but embraced and promoted it. We Asian kids — we immigrants — were going to achieve the American dream and make our families proud and do better than our parents and set an example for everyone else.

And we didn’t need “help” either, just our hard work and discipline. I heard a lot of anti-black racism from Asian friends and family growing up and still do. It is a HUGE problem the AA community needs to acknowledge and address.
